The recent success of Yamaha ATV parts dealers have a few automotive dealerships rethinking their online marketing approach. The ATV market is very aggressive just like the automotive dealerships. There are a lot of competitors out there who are trying to get to the top of the search engine heap. The competition is so fierce in fact that in a typical market there can be as much as 15,000,000 competitive pages all vying for the top spots. This means that a lot of Yamaha ATV parts dealers are doing everything possible to get to the top positions. Sometimes they pay for it. Sometimes they create viral web videos and sometimes they do a lot of praying.

But the point of this popularity game is that the ATV market is really setting a great example. A lot of auto dealerships could really benefit from this type of aggressive online marketing. The main reason why the auto dealers should take on this type of marketing is because it is so successful. When you think about terms of bandwidth, web space, server space, viral capacity and holding a captive audience the choice is obvious. Newspapers cannot offer this type of flexibility and either can printed coupons that you get in your mailbox. The web is a free floating life raft for many companies and in a lot of cases it is saving them.

The challenge happened 18 months ago when newspapers started to fall apart. Running full page ads no longer became an option for many dealerships. Many auto dealerships do not have a real option to run advertisements in the paper because of budgets. So they will rely on doing radio and television spots to get attention. This becomes a difficult situation when you start running out of media venues – namely newspapers. Metro Detroit has lost several newspapers including the Ann Arbor News and the Eccentric. There are also mergers that have been happening all across the country in the last two years.

One thing that the ATV web sites have done correctly is optimize their web sites fully and create smart pay per click campaigns. Some of the more creative ATV dealers have figured out a way to scrap the PPC model entirely and deal strictly with organic tactics. This enables web sites to stay on the top of the search engines without added expense. If the auto dealers are going to partake in this type of promotion now is the time. There has been a lot of apprehension in recent months. But actually the online environment has never been better. Many auto dealerships could learn a lot from the progress that ATV dealers have made.

How to Choose an ATV

With so many ATVs out there designed for different purposes deciding which one is right for you can be tough. This guide will help you determine what type of ATV will be most suitable. It then goes on to explore what to look for in a used ATV to help you make the right buying decision.


It never ceases to surprise me how many ATV owners do little research before visiting a dealer or buying an ATV for sale online. Are they mad? A little research will ensure you don’t make the same mistake and enable you to get the machine that best fits your needs, abilities and budget. The more research undertaken the happier you will be with your purchase. More times than I care to remmember I have made a purchase only to find a couple of weeks later a product that would have suited my needs much better. You simply can’t afford to let that happen with an expensive product like an ATV or Four Wheeler.


The first thing to consider is your budget. How much can you afford to spend on your ATV? If you haven’t previously owned one don’t forget to make an allowance for the ancillary equipment that you’ll need e.g. helmet, boots and gloves etc and a proper training course. Your budget will determine whether you should buy new or used although my preference would always be a used ATV as there are plenty of great deals available ATVs available and you don’t take such a hit on vehicle depreciation.


The next most important consideration is the intended use of the ATV. You are unlikely to want a 4 stroke 4×4 if you are looking for a machine that is suitable for racing. Likewise you won’t want a 2 stroke lightweight racing machine for towing things around the farm. This might sound obvious and it is obvious but I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen machines bought that did not meet the owners requirements (especially online purchases).


So for towing and farm work check out 4×4 machines. These are the most expensive new so a used atv can save a couple of thousand dollars but remember to use the checklist below to make sure everything is in order before you buy. In my opinion Arctic Cat make some of the best 4×4 machines.


If its a speed machine that your looking for you’ll want to be looking at Yamaha and Kawasaki who produce some awesome models that balance power and speed with good handling.


There is also a need to take account of your local riding conditions. Where do you intend to ride your ATV? If you don’t know check out the local trails and see what sort of machines your fellow riders are using. Get their opinions. An interesting all round machine that suits quite a few different environments is the Polaris 400 4×4 which has a 2 stroke engine (very unusual in a 4×4). A great all round ATV for most trail blazers. It’s biggest limitation is push and pull where a 4 stroke engine definitely has an edge due to it’s greater torque.


What riding experience do you have? Make sure that the machine you buy matches your experience. If you’ve never ridden an ATV before please book yourself on a proper and extensive training course. It’s a great investment and will help you get the most from yourself and your machine.


As I have expressed a preference for used ATV I thought it would be helpful to put together a check list of things to look out for and check with the owner before you buy.


Start by checking there is a full service history. Don’t even go near a machine without a service history – you’ve been warned.


Electrics – check or ask if they all work and make sure there are no shorts, removed or damaged accessories.


Wheels – Check/Ask about the condition of rims – damaged rims are a sign that the bike has taken it’s share of knocks and bumps.


Bodywork – Check/Ask about damage to bodywork and check things like flaps, instruments and levers.


Rear Axle – Check/Ask if there are leaking seals and the level and condition of the oil. Watery or muddy looking oil is a sign that there is a problem with seals.


Front Axle – Here you want to check/ask if there are loose steering joints, excessive bearing wear or suspension link movement.


Engine – Surprisingly ATV engines don’t cause that many problems but watch out for, or ask about, smoking exhausts (sign of worn valves). Clattery noises heard whilst revving can point towards a worn camshaft or drive. Again notice the condition of the oil. If it is dark and thick it has not been changed with sufficient regularity.


Who owns it? ATVs are stolen all the time so always examine the engine and chassis number and check that no financing is in place by doing an online check. This can uncover if a used atv is stolen, accident damaged, had a registration transfer or has outstanding finance.


Follow these simple guidelines and you will greatly reduce the risks of choosing the wrong used ATV for you needs and avoid buying a pup.

Atv Accidents

As the popularity of all terrain vehicles (ATVs) has risen sharply, so have the numbers of accidents, injuries, and deaths caused by the vehicles. Design flaws, inappropriate marketing, and cheap, defective parts create a dangerous combination which, all too often, results in catastrophic and fatal accidents.


Marketing and inadequate warnings


ATVs are an indispensible tool in some professions, and when in the right hands can even be used to save lives. However, inappropriate has caused many ATVs to fall into the hands of inexperienced riders and even children, who lack the training, skill, judgment, strength, and motor skills necessary to operate the vehicles safely.


According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), from 1999 to 2005 there were 3,618 reported ATV-related deaths and an estimated 796,500 ATV-related injuries treated in emergency rooms. More than 25% of deaths and over 30% of injuries occurred in children under the age of 16.


Advertised for power, speed, and as if they are appropriate for extreme sports, ATV marketing encourages unsafe riding and the illusion that they are designed to operate under conditions which will, in reality, cause a dangerous crash.


Many lack the proper warning labels and materials or have manuals which are confusing and unclear. Dealerships and rental centers often fail to pass on the documentation when it exists.


Design flaws

Atv and Dirt Bike Safety for Kids

A dirt bike or an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) is meant to ride off-road. It is in fact a lightweight motorcycle equipped with rugged tires and suspension; in other words it can be called a 2 or 4 wheel off road motorcycle. ATV’s and dirt bikes have been around since the 60s and are still thriving. Kids and adults thirst for adventure and the call to rugged terrains is renewed with every generation.

ATV are used as outdoors utility vehicle such as on farms, hunting… ATVs are good recreational vehicle, they are fun to rid on dirt and sand dunes; there are many professional, sanctioned off road ATV races. The demand for dirt bikes and ATVs has drastically increased. There are many ATVs and dirt bikes available at cheap prices for kids and adults. It is now common to see youngsters who are seven to eight years old mounting dirt bikes and ATVs expertly and with ease. But injuries caused by riding dirt bikes and ATVs happen very often. Studies by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission have come up with stunning figures: many as 4 out of 10 people who are involved in an ATV accident are kids under the age of 16.

The primary safety rule of course is to first learn how to ride an ATV or Dirt Bike before hitting the outdoors. The responsibility for properly training a child to ride ATVs or dirt bikes lies with the parents. The young rider must be supervised at all times while riding an off-road machine.

The law in the US does not allow ATVs on freeways and kids should never be allowed to ride where there is traffic. Children should not be allowed carry anyone on the off road vehicle; this is a major cause of serious accidents. It’s a good practice to make a complete pre-ride check before using the ATV or dirt bike. Check the tire pressure, gas level, test the brakes front and rear as well as the lights. Please refer to the respective ATV manufacturer manual for complete details.

Riding on public roads can prove fatal. Ensure that children never ride without a helmet and wear gloves, eye protection and protective gear. It is good sense not to make do with protective gear meant for other activities such as daddy’s football gear – because the gear required for safe riding on dirt bikes and ATVs is designed with that purpose in mind.

Bikes and ATVs are age specific and size specific, so elders are well advised to buy and upgrade the bike according to the child’s age. There is no rule as to what age a kid has to be to ride an ATV or dirt bike but do not put a 4 year old on a 110cc ATV or a 50cc dirt bike. A 4 stroke 70cc ATV for kids packs enough punch for an adult to have fun on it. Thankfully most youth ATVs and dirt bikes are equipped with safety controls such as:

A speed governor that sets the maximum speed as low as 5MPH

A corded plug that allows an adult to run along with the youngster and pull to kill the engine (great feature for very young riders)

A remote control that can kill the engine by the press of a button within up to 200 feet (great to keep little older kids under control)

As for the ever-popping question, how young of a child can ride an ATV? Since every kid is different, it is up to each parent to decide what age a child can ride what ATV or dirt bike.

Remember that a child on a bike is definitely vulnerable. Riding vehicles off road can be very fun and provide a healthy workout. To reduce the risk of injury, good training, constant supervision and following the manufacturer’s instructions are a must.

These days there are just too many ATV dealers around – so much so that one could easily get confused with the name “ATV dealer” itself.
