Motorbike dealers are your friends

Souping up your own bike and doing your own motorbike repairs can be a huge part of the fun of owning a motorbike and there are plenty of biker magazines, web pages and club newsletters that will give you ideas and guides as to how to do anything from the most basic repairs to some pretty advanced alterations. Doing your own repairs is a large part of bike culture and getting your hands dirty and knowing your bike inside out is as much of a part of the lure for some as getting your knees down at the weekend.

Even though you are doing your own maintenance, you should remember that motorcycle dealers are still your friends especially when it comes to getting parts. In machines as finely tunes as modern bikes getting the right parts is absolutely vital and there is no point in buying cheap knock-off parts from unknown sources on the Internet when the functionality of this part may be very literally very important to both your life and the life of the bike.

Motorbike dealers are very used to owners doing their own motorbike repairs, and unlike with car dealers the staff in them tends to be knowledgeable and more than willing to help you find the right parts. Often even with a single model of bike there may be more than a hundred different variations of the same part, covering different years, different countries and bikes tweaked for different tolerances. Although a replacement part may fit your bike it is always worth double checking that it is the right one and if you are upgrading, then a member of staff with the right experience at a good dealership may well be able to suggest alternatives which could be useful and they may also be able to suggest other things you could change at the same time.

When you buy a Suzuki bike you are buying the result of years of evolution and development. They started out making clip on motors for push bikes after the Second World War. Though these proved to be moderately successful, it wasn’t long before Suzuki moved into making specifically designed ‘motorbikes’.

In 1953 Suzuki released their ‘Diamond Free’ motorbike. Since the arrival of this basic, 2-speed model, Suzuki have consistently been at the forefront of motorbike design. They have been hugely influential in motorbike development over the last 50 years. This sort of knowledge is well worth the investment.

Motorcyclists are a very loyal group. If they find a manufacturer or bike that they like, they will usually stick with it for a long time. Motorcycle Buying Guide – Dealer Negotiation Tips

You’ve made the big decision: it’s time to buy a motorcycle. You’ve done your research and you basically know what style, and maybe even what particular model you want. Now, it’s time to head to the showroom and make a deal! Before stepping foot into your local motorcycle dealer, keep this in mind: prices are often non-negotiable… particularly on popular models.

Motorcycle dealers do not work with the same high profit markets as car dealers, and are much less capable of making a better deal than what’s listed on the price tag. But, slow-selling models (those usually on sale) sometimes have a bit of negotiation room. And, of course, you’re always free to try and get a few accessories (helmets, gloves, maintenance) thrown in to seal the deal.

The good news is that motorcycle dealerships are not nearly as stressful to deal with as their automobile counterparts. The salesmen at these dealerships usually aren’t very pushy, so it may be up to you to ask a lot of questions.

Many dealerships don’t allow test drives, but they should at least permit you to sit on the bike you’re considering and start the engine.

When checking over a bike consider these important factors:

-Whether or not the seat is comfortable.

-If the handlebars are comfortable.

-If your knees rest neatly on either side of the gas tank.

Next, it’s time to check the engine. Rev it up! Take notice to see if it features a nice smooth feel at high RPM’s, or if it feels buzzy instead.

Also, consider the weight. Does it seem like it will be easy to control? Can you easily pick it up off of the ground?

Now take note of this important tip: don’t buy any bike on your first visit! Even if you’ve fallen in love with it! Always check out bikes form a few different manufacture’s before making this all-important decision.

Once you’ve made your final decision, return to the dealership of your choice and choose from their current inventory.

While price haggling usually isn’t an option for bike buyers, trying to get a few free bies thrown is isn’t out of the question – especially if you are a cash buyer. Of course, most dealers now offer their own financing options, so if you don’t have the cash upfront, you can still purchase the bike of your dreams.

As you can see, buying a motorcycle is a bit different from buying a car – but it can also be a lot easier, quicker and much less of a hassle! Now, get out there and find yourself the bike of dreams.

OEM Parts and Accessories or Aftermarket, How Do I Know What’s Best For My Motorcycle?

The number of motorcycle & ATV parts and accessories available on the market today is staggering.   With all the different products from OEM manufacturers and aftermarket providers, how do I know what parts to buy, and where to buy them?

Before you shop it’s important to understand the difference between OEM parts and aftermarket parts.  OEM parts stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.  This refers to the company that originally manufactured the product.  These include Japanese brands like Yamaha, Suzuki, Polaris, Kawasaki and Honda as well US and European brands like Harley Davidson, Ducati, BMW and Triumph. When referring to motorcycle parts, OEM designates a replacement part made by the original manufacturer of the bike.  Aftermarket refers to products produced in the secondary market.  These products are not produced by the original equipment manufacturer, and they do not carry an OEM warranty.

Which product should I choose?  Typically repairs are best completed with OEM parts.  These products typically carry a better warranty than aftermarket parts, and in general the fitment is superior on OEM products.  However, there are aftermarket upgrades available that can enhance your motorcycle’s performance as well as your personal riding experience.  These products vary from spark plugs, air filters, tires, suspension components and electronics to features like gel seats and frame protectors.  There are many quality brands available today.  It is best to research the brands or ask your dealer for assistance.  Typically your local dealer will have a good idea as to what products are well made and which ones to avoid.

How do I shop for OEM parts and accessories?   OEM parts are available exclusively through franchised motorcycle dealers.  They can be purchased at retail stores throughout the country or on the web.  If you decide to shop on the web for OEM parts, you will have to familiarize yourself with and OEM parts fiche.  The parts fiche or parts finder is a schematic of each individual bike by part and broken down to nuts, bolts and even washers.  If you have never used a fiche, you can typically get assistance from the dealer who operates the website.  Since only authorized franchised dealers have access to the schematics, they are your best source for help.

There are a lot of websites to choose from, how do I pick one?  There are a lot of websites.  There are many reputable sites to choose from, and some you certainly want to avoid including some e-bay sellers..  Typically it is pretty easy to create a vendor relationship with the major aftermarket suppliers.  Some require a store front, and others just have a minimum order.  It is hard to know whether you’re shopping with a real company or simply purchasing a product from a guy working part time from his garage.  This is why we recommend you shop with a franchised dealer.  There are many benefit to purchasing your parts, accessories and gear through an authorized dealer.  First, franchised dealers are held to a higher standard.  They are backed by the manufacturers they sell.  They are also regulated by the state they operate within, specifically by the DMV (department of motor vehicles) and State Attorney General’s Office.  They are required to hold bonds, and if they do not fulfill your order, there is a means for recourse.  In addition to this, franchised dealers are the only place you can purchase the OEM parts and OEM accessories for your motorcycle or ATV; and since they have access to all the same aftermarket accessories and gear that the independents have, why not do all your shopping in one place.

Harley Salvage Motorcycles for Sale

Have you ever wanted to purchase a motorcycle?  If you are into motorcycles I am sure you would want a Harley Davidson Motorcycle.  But the problem with Harley Davidson for the normal consumer is that these bikes are very expensive.  Especially if you want a bulky fully decked out version.  Of course you may like to look at the entry level Harley.  But even these bikes are on the pricey side.  Knowing this what other options do you have.

Buying used is another option for purchasing a Harley Davidson.  Their are a lot of Harley Davidson owners that have older bikes that they have just grown out of.  Or the owner just can’t ride anymore.  Some cases you may even find a bike where, sorry to say, the owner has just past away. In these cases you may find a late model Harley that is in perfect condition that you can get for a great price.

Another option is to go the salvage way.  Salvage Harley Davidson bike are bikes that have either been in an accident or have been damaged in some way.  This could be from flood damage.  Be sure to find out what happened to the bike before buying.  Some of these salvage bikes are not able to get repaired.  They just may have too much damage and would cost to much to get them back on the road.  In that case you could use the parts to bring another Harley back to life.  But in some occasions you will find a salvage Harley that just does not need so much to get it back running.  It may be the case that the salvage Harley is a recovered stolen bike and the insurance company worked out a deal with the owner to get a payoff of the bike.  Now, the insurance company is just trying to get the bike off of its books.  This is a perfect opportunity for you the consumer.  The bank is motivated to release the bike at a significant discount.  You just have to know how to put in a bid that the bank will accept.

Auctions are another option for finding Harley Salvage For Sale.  Sites like eBay has a number of salvage Harley that are ready for purchase.  Once again it is about producing the right price to get your hands on the bike.

Motorcycle Insurance Tips

Motorcycle Insurance Tips

In many states, it is mandatory to have insurance on your motorcycle. In addition to covering any loans on the bike, the insurance is designed to cover medical bills for personal injury as well as for collision costs. Even if motorcycle insurance isn’t mandatory in your state, it is still a good idea to have it. You never know when you may need it. Many people think motorcycle insurance is too expensive to have, but it is really affordable. There are some great tips to help you get the best possible rate.

If you haven’t taken a motorcycle safety course, you should. Not only will it help you become a better motorcycle rider, it will also help you earn a discount on your motorcycle insurance. This is because motorcycle companies feel an informed rider is less likely to make common mistakes or to indulge in reckless behaviors. If you currently have any kind of insurance on your home or other vehicles, that particular company will likely offer you a significant discount on insurance coverage for your motorcycle.

When comparing motorcycle insurance rates, make sure you are comparing apples against apples. This simply means you should only compare the cost once you have determined what the insurance covers. Ask for information about he dollar amount of coverage as well as the deductible amount. A deductible is the amount you will have to pay out of pocket for each claim filed before the insurance will pay the remainder.

If you are able to store your motorcycle inside a storage unit or garage, then do so. Most insurance companies will give you additional discounts for your motorcycle being in a secure location that reduces the chances of it getting hit, vandalized, stolen, or damaged by the natural elements. Many insurance companies will give you an added discount if you won’t be riding your motorcycle during severe winter months. This is a great option for those of you who live in colder parts of the world. However, keep this coverage in mind because you will likely be tempted to get that bike out when a warm spell appears for a few days during the winter months.

Keeping a clean driving record both in your motor vehicles and on your motorcycle will save you a great deal of money on your motorcycle insurance. Insurance companies love to reward those who have remained a low risk. They also want to keep your business. If you have paid your premiums on time for six months and have not have any claims or moving violations, then contact your insurance company and ask for them to review your policy for a lower price. Many insurance companies will automatically do this upon renewal of your policy, but if you have an annual policy then you should contact them after six months.

If you are just learning to ride a motorcycle but don’t have a valid motorcycle license yet, you may want to consider purchasing Learner Motorcycle Insurance. This is a great way to ensure you are covered in the event of an injury or accident. While this type of insurance is going to cost you more than basic motorcycle insurance, you can’t put a price tag on safety.

The internet is a great place to look for motorcycle insurance as well. Some insurance companies don’t offer motorcycle coverage while others specialize in it. The internet gives you a convenient place to enter your information once and then receive quotes by email from various insurance companies. This definitely reduces the amount of time you will spend on the process as well as allows you to easily compare rates.

Having motorcycle insurance is a good idea regardless of it being mandatory in your state or not. While operating any type of motor vehicle comes with a risk, you can help lower the financial risk involved in operating one by covering the cost of damages and medical expenses should you be involved in an accident.
